Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using such treatments must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
